Sunday, every Sunday, let's have a community picnic. It's probably been a long week, and it's lovely to have a few minutes to sit back and relax and enjoy some good conversation in a less formal space. Feel free to bring something for the Picnic Basket - a poem you liked this week, a thought you had or something you experienced, or even something completely unrelated to poetry whatsoever that you just feel like sharing. Just take a moment to say hello, and maybe have a bite to eat; no one is going anywhere fast, and the shade promises some relief from the everyday heat. Let’s get to know each other a bit better, here under the branches of the poet’s tree.

I am trying to get into the habit of writing more poems about baseball, which you can find on my other blog, lipogramscorecard.wordpress.com. Doggerel, sonnets and free verses.

If you want to read the context, these are what they're based on...

"Day 162:" The Baltimore Orioles fail to win their division, meaning that they would have to win a one-game playoff in order to reach the main playoffs. This is the first year that one-game playoffs have been built into the schedule. Also, the night of the presidential debates.

"Ronnie:" About the Chicago Cubs' announcer, Ron Santo, who died two years ago.

"Wild Birds:" The Orioles win their playoff, and so do the St. Louis Cardinals. The latter team benefit from a controversial call of the "infield fly rule," prompting the other team to play the game under protest and the fans to throw their garbage onto the field.

"Division Series, Day 1:" The main series get underway. Pat Neshek pitches for the Oakland Athletics, despite his son dying 23 hours after he was born two days prior.

I'm chuckling at the blog's subtitle. And at "Day 162."

I posted two poems for the UK's National Poetry Day at my journal. The first is Pia Tafdrup's poem for Norway, in Danish with an English translation. The second is a humorous piece about linguistic and cultural translations written by a Scottish poet about the English and the French, and using both languages.

Of the poems I read this week, the one that made me go "Oooh! Must share!" the most was Luisa Igloria's , about women poets.

*fake tutting* You know [insert disprivileged social group of your choice here] aren't allowed to be successful AND happy because that upsets the cliche cart.

Thank you for the link. :-)

I always enjoy [personal profile] snowynight's hosted weeks. Not only are the chosen poems always evocative and gorgeous, but I have learned so much about Chinese poetry and poets.

No real poetry related news for me this week. It was a fairly busy week for me school wise since I had some stuff to do before our fall break started. I am enjoying said break right now though, which is lovely. I am visiting family who live about an hour and a half from me. At the moment I am sitting snug in my flannel pajamas with coffee at my side. The chickens and ducks are wandering their pen happily and the rooster routinely reminds us that he is awesome (in his mind). The cats are stalking each other outside amid the fallen leaves. The golden yellow, bright orange, and brilliant red glow in the gray light of the cloudy day. My nephew is happily talking to his Halo buddies and blowing things up. My niece is in her room (she's 17 and lives in there for the most part). The adults are on laptops and enjoying their morning. So it is very lovely vacation. :D

My internet connection has been variously slow and dead for over a month now. So I'm backlogged.

The October Poetry Fishbowl ran this past week, and spilled over from Tuesday to Wednesday. I haven't got the followup report done yet because the net was down. But you can use the "poem" tag to see newly posted poems. Unsold poetry is listed, in case you'd like to buy some.

You can vote on which series should get the free epic. I'll be posting a generally sponsored poetry poll and a half-price poetry sale poll, probably Monday.

Read the 2011 Dwarf Stars Award finalists list. This is for short-short speculative poetry. One of them is mine. These go in the voting anthology which will be mailed to Science Fiction Poetry Association members for voting.
