Previous signups: #1, #2.

Guidelines below are loosely modeled after those of the comm [community profile] poetry, though please note that there are several important differences.

What does it mean to be a Poetry Host at POETREE?

The weekly Poetry Host is responsible for posting at least three poems spread throughout the week as well as an optional meta post or question for the audience. Poetry Hosts run the gamut from poets (amateur & professional) to poetry enthusiasts, and from community members to guests from outside of Dreamwidth. All are welcome.

Do you have to host an entire week to be a Poetry Host?

No. The community has regular scheduled Multi-Hosted Themed Weeks where you can sign up to host an a single day. These weeks will be clearly marked on our community calender, which will also provide a link to the sign-up post for that themed week several weeks in advance.

I am interested in hosting a week. What do I need to do?

  • Reply to this post letting us know you are interested in hosting a week. If you are not a Dreamwidth member, you can leave an OpenID or anonymous reply with your preferred name and some way to get in touch with you. If you aren't comfortable leaving an email address publicly, feel free to send that information to the admins privately at poetry.at.dreamwidth [at] gmail [dot] com).

  • When an 'Open Slot' week comes up and it's your turn to Host, one of the admins will contact you Thursday or Friday the week before to confirm.

  • Ideally we like to do things on a first come, first serve basis because trying to schedule too far out in advance can get very messy. However, if a conflict comes up when we contact you about Hosting the next week, or if you know in advance that you have very limited availability, take a look at the community calender and then let us know what weeks you can host, and we'll schedule or reschedule you for a specific week and mark the calendar accordingly.

  • During your week, you'll post at least three poems (yours, others' with their permission or permissive copyright, or some mix thereof) plus an optional meta post or question for the audience spread out during the week (no more than one every 12 hours or so, so people can have a chance to really engage with the poem or meta when it's posted instead of consuming it quickly and moving on to the next). If offline life interferes and you can't post the full set of poems, it certainly is not the end of the world, but please do think whether you'll be able to reasonably commit to the week when you're asked.

  • In addition, your first post should be an brief introduction post detailing whatever background about yourself you feel is relevant and would like to share as well as a rough overview of what you plan on posting for your week.

  • If you are not a Dreamwidth member you can email us your content and we will post it for you. Again, the [community profile] poetree admins are available at poetree.at.dreamwidth [at] gmail [dot] com.

  • Weeks will run Monday - Saturday. (Sundays are now reserved for the weekly 'Sunday Picnic' post and the biweekly 'Climbing the Poet's Tree' challenges.) Once you've finished out your week, feel free to comment on this signup post again and say you'd like to do it again.

  • Poetry can be of any era, type, language, structure, etc. (If it isn't written in English, we'd like a translation, whether yours or someone else's.) When you're Hosting, your poems do not have to be on a particular theme, but if you'd like to make them themed, please feel free. A good place to start if you're looking for theme ideas is the themed weeks master post.

  • For more information re: formatting your posts and content guidelines, please see the Recommended Posting Format post. Also feel free to contact the admins via private messenger [personal profile] poetree_admin or e-mail (poetree.at.dreamwidth at gmail dot com) with any questions or concerns.

I want to say yes, but I'll be traveling with family obligations the second half of the week. The week after would be better.

Okay - we'll pencil you on the calendar for Mon., Sept. 24th - Sat., Sept. 29th, and will check in again the Friday before to confirm.

If you want someone to go this coming week, I can probably recommend a few poems. Probably not thematic though.

We'd love to have you Host! Thank you so much. :o)

Admin note: Are the poems you have in mind ones in the public domain or with explicitly permissive copyright? It can be a bit tricky to wrangle permission from living poets to post poems in full when you need a quick turnaround. (Hm...though that does suggest possibilities of asking people already familiar with Dreamwidth and/or POETREE, e.g. poets on DW or past Hosts...)

Feel free to PM [personal profile] poetree_admin if you're having trouble navigating this or brainstorming what to post. Note that if you are recommending poems that aren't a.) public domain, or b.), posted with permissive copyright, or c.) ones you've received direct permission from the poet to repost, it's best to quote in part and then link to an official full text elsewhere. (For an example of a post to the comm that does this, see Format: Villanelle (Pt. 1 of 2)).

Um...to be honest I was planning on winging it with a grab bag. I'll pass on living poets if that's an issue. :)

We're happy to help you try & get permission(s) if there are particular poems from living poets you'd like to post in full - it just tends to take 2-3 days, is all.

(We're trying to be more consistent about enforcing/promoting the 'respect copyright/poet's rights' comm policy given the dividends that kind of policy pays down the road in terms of having professional poets as guest Hosts.)

If you don't want to deal with checking copyright/contacting poets but you're still interested in posting some poems from living poets, maybe do 1-2 posts where the post consists of you recommending & linking to several such poems & quoting a few of your favorite lines from each?

Hope that helps.

I mean, I really haven't made up my mind yet about which poems to include. So I should be able to just skip living poets and not worry about it, which is probably the easiest route.

Or another way of thinking about it - what if you introduced us to a grab bag of poets, and choose 1+ of their poems for each to either quote or post in full. Built-in theme without having to think too much about linking the week's posts together.

I can do a week. It's either Chinese poetry and music or Female poets in China

I am finding myself drawn to hosting a week on slam poetry (or possibly "Atlanta slam poets," because I know of at least two whom I think are FANTASTIC). I know nothing about slam poetry; I just find myself intensely interested in it and how performative it is.

I'm a little terrified.

Would I still need permission from the artists to post publicly available videos of their poetry (I'm thinking YouTube and a particular TEDTalk that I love)?

Yes I would, although I may need a little hand-holding.

The week after next would be best for me.
