Sunday, every Sunday, let's have a community picnic. It's probably been a long week, and it's lovely to have a few minutes to sit back and relax and enjoy some good conversation in a less formal space. Feel free to bring something for the Picnic Basket - a poem you liked this week, a thought you had or something you experienced, or even something completely unrelated to poetry whatsoever that you just feel like sharing. Just take a moment to say hello, and maybe have a bite to eat; no one is going anywhere fast, and the shade promises some relief from the everyday heat. Let’s get to know each other a bit better, here under the branches of the poet’s tree.

I am trying to get into the habit of writing more poems about baseball, which you can find on my other blog, lipogramscorecard.wordpress.com. Doggerel, sonnets and free verses.

If you want to read the context, these are what they're based on...

"Day 162:" The Baltimore Orioles fail to win their division, meaning that they would have to win a one-game playoff in order to reach the main playoffs. This is the first year that one-game playoffs have been built into the schedule. Also, the night of the presidential debates.

"Ronnie:" About the Chicago Cubs' announcer, Ron Santo, who died two years ago.

"Wild Birds:" The Orioles win their playoff, and so do the St. Louis Cardinals. The latter team benefit from a controversial call of the "infield fly rule," prompting the other team to play the game under protest and the fans to throw their garbage onto the field.

"Division Series, Day 1:" The main series get underway. Pat Neshek pitches for the Oakland Athletics, despite his son dying 23 hours after he was born two days prior.

I'm chuckling at the blog's subtitle. And at "Day 162."

I posted two poems for the UK's National Poetry Day at my journal. The first is Pia Tafdrup's poem for Norway, in Danish with an English translation. The second is a humorous piece about linguistic and cultural translations written by a Scottish poet about the English and the French, and using both languages.
