Sunday, every Sunday, let's have a community picnic. It's probably been a long week, and it's lovely to have a few minutes to sit back and relax and enjoy some good conversation in a less formal space. Feel free to bring something for the Picnic Basket - a poem you liked this week, a thought you had or something you experienced, or even something completely unrelated to poetry whatsoever that you just feel like sharing. Just take a moment to say hello, and maybe have a bite to eat; no one is going anywhere fast, and the shade promises some relief from the everyday heat. Let’s get to know each other a bit better, here under the branches of the poet’s tree.

This themed week just past was made possible in part to the generous permission of the original poet, Julia Stein, to repost her poem "Downtown Women" to the community and use it as a touchstone for our activities this week. Unfortunately, Ms. Stein is currently recovering from an illness and has been unable to participate in any of the online discussion at this time.

I plan on emailing Ms. Stein early tomorrow morning to thank her again for the permission and give her a sense of how the week went. If you have any messages you would like me to include in the email, please comment on this thread with the message and note whether you would like to have a name (if so, please specify what name) attached to the message or not. Alternatively, send me a PM or an email to 'jjhunter24@gmail.com'.

I'm hosting an anonymous love meme this week. I know some of you have already discovered it, but all are welcome.

If you have an active thread ongoing, feel free to comment on this thread with a link signal boosting it.

For example, here's mine.

And here's the index of everyone nominated so far. Self-nominations are encouraged if you want a thread & don't have one yet - don't be shy about asking for love!

Lessee -- read a handful of cantos of Orlando Furioso (who is, as usual, over-the-top in his madness), wrote another hexagram poem, and a couple translations. And now, I'm going to turn off the wifi and get something done for reals, as I have the day to myself till mid-afternoon.

I posted a new poem on my journal this week.. Trigger Warning: deals with childhood issues and parental control, nothing terribly explicit but felt that I should let people have a head's up.

"Thank you for allowing us to post and discuss your powerful poem, "Downtown Women". It meant a lot to our community and spurred some excellent in depth exploration of the history of women's rights and the labor movie. Many thanks and wishes for a speedy recovery." --Manda, aka alee_grrl

The week started off kind of rough for me, but I was able to finish one poem and write and re-draft another. I am slowly getting caught up on my school readings, which makes me happy. And I am learning a lot about computer hardware/firmware and repair as I slowly but surely work towards getting an older laptop back up and running so that I have a back up. I was terrified to try the repairs myself, but, as my dad pointed out, I couldn't really make it any worse than it was. So it has been a good, if occasionally frustrating, learning experience. Hope everyone is having an excellent weekend.

I posted Edward Thomas' two poems for his two daughters, one each, but haven't had time to link it before:

I've been reading Linda Chase's poems (two books completed and partway through a third) but haven't reviewed them yet.

My brain, which took a month off from poetry in favour of visual art, is back on the poetry now. Amongst other pleasures, I was able to spend a while sitting by a secluded lake that resulted in a page full of new work. \o/

How lovely! And I know exactly what you mean re: your brain taking a break from poetry in favor of another form of creativity; happens to me all the tie.

I found a new form of poem via a friend writing one: the bref double. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with this format?

I did -- nothing original, but got a handful of translations either polished or drafted. Almost reached the end of autumn.

I would like to do something with Chinese poetry again, but I'm not sure what.

There's a bonus poetry fishbowl coming up on Tuesday, Sept. 18 focused on my series Monster House, which is suburban fantasy. Feel free to drop by and give me prompts or just watch for poems to appear.

Neat! Well, if you put your name down now, it's likely you'll get either the open slot at the beginning oc October or the one half way through that month. [personal profile] alee_grrl and I are also happy to happy to help you brainstorm, if you'd like assistance on that front.

I have great respect for anyone who can write and draw together, from the cartoons Stevie Smith drew with her poems to children's story authors who write and illustrate their books.
