Sunday, every Sunday, let's have a community picnic. It's probably been a long week, and it's lovely to have a few minutes to sit back and relax and enjoy some good conversation in a less formal space. Feel free to bring something for the Picnic Basket - a poem you liked this week, a thought you had or something you experienced, or even something completely unrelated to poetry whatsoever that you just feel like sharing. Just take a moment to say hello, and maybe have a bite to eat; no one is going anywhere fast, and the shade promises some relief from the everyday heat. Let’s get to know each other a bit better, here under the branches of the poet’s tree.

Don't have much poetry related stuff this week. Am done with all but one final. Am currently obsessed with The Hunger Games soundtrack, which has many beautiful songs though it is rather melancholy (much like the books). There is hope within the melancholy though, which is the nice, and reminds me of this poem that snowynight shared with us this week. What's everyone else been up to?

I have retreated into the world of YA Fantasy/Sci-Fi, which is where I like to go when I am feeling not greatz. Sometimes I come out for poetry someone has posted on Dreamwidth, or knitting.

Right now it is Harry Potter and a new-to-me series, the Sisters Grimm. I am seriously tempted to read the Hunger Games, but I am afraid it might be a tad too melancholy for me in my current state.

Also, hi, I do not need a cold right now.

Books make everything better.

YA Sci Fi/Fantasy is my favorite retreat. I haven't read Sisters Grimm (loved Harry Potter). I also highly recommend Charles de Lint (Little (Grrl) Lost is the one I most recently read and it is wonderful, one of the main characters is a Little like the people in The Borrowers), Nina Kiriki Hoffman (Her new YA series Thresholds is awaiting me at the moment), and Tamora Pierce (most recently adored the Beka Cooper books).

I would hold off on The Hunger Games. I loved the series for its honest depiction of PTSD, and for the pointed political/social commentary, but it does have some things that can be triggering and it is intense. I had to put down the first book for a little while and come back to it. Once I hit the half way point I couldn't put it down and had to finish the whole series (thankfully I bought them all at once at the used book store). In the end I felt they were well worth the read, and I will eventually be doing a post on the series (and the movie and soundtrack) in my 100 Things I Love meme. If you do start it maybe keep something light hearted and funny (like Terry Pratchet's Wee Free Men book, another set that I loved) to read before bed.

Luisa Igloria's Leaving no one and nothing behind... caught me on my way to something else. As did the equally compelling poems that prompted it.

Both Luisa's poem and the poems prompted it are amazingly beautiful. I shall have to bookmark them to reread later and to share with some friends who would appreciate them.
