Sunday, every Sunday, let's have a community picnic. It's probably been a long week, and it's lovely to have a few minutes to sit back and relax and enjoy some good conversation in a less formal space. Feel free to bring something for the Picnic Basket - a poem you liked this week, a thought you had or something you experienced, or even something completely unrelated to poetry whatsoever that you just feel like sharing. Just take a moment to say hello, and maybe have a bite to eat; no one is going anywhere fast, and the shade promises some relief from the everyday heat. Let’s get to know each other a bit better, here under the branches of the poet’s tree.

I published my 2013 collection of poetry and flash fiction, Lavender Blue and other poems. Paperback (costs money) and various ebook (free) editions available.

So my poetry class is finishing up week three of workshopping each other's poems. First workshop comment on my poem for this week included something to the tune of 'try to work the 'oh, sweetheart' refrain into the second stanza'.

It's a villanelle. We learned about villanelles in class.

Oh man. That is a seriously facepalm inducing bit of feedback.

It gets better! It's one of only two pieces of feedback. From my group of six. When all the feedback was due last night. I don't think the other feedbacker knows it's a villanelle either.

I could whine moar but this is [community profile] poetree not [profile] transgenderqueer. (That is a cool comm name. I should make it.)

I offer my sympathies for what sounds like a very frustrating situation.

On a side note [profile] transgenderqueer is a cool comm name and would make for a very cool community.

:)

Yeah, pretty sure second feedbacker also has no idea it's a villanelle. "I really like how the last stanza incorporates all the rhymes." IT'S A VILLANELLE.

ETA: Third feedbacker belatedly also has no idea it's a villanelle. "I liked that your last stanza was longer than the others, but maybe make it 5 lines?" VILLANELLE.

Oh my. Apparently they paid no attention when the class covered villanelles.

Apparently not. It's a distinctive form! It should not be difficult for someone vaguely acquainted with the form to recognize!

Came across this wonderful performance by cellist and folk musician Leyla McCalla. Apparently she has a new album out that is entirely a tribute to the works of Langston Hughes, which of course put me in mind of [personal profile] raze's wonderful post on Langston Hughes.
