Sunday, every Sunday, let's have a community picnic. It's probably been a long week, and it's lovely to have a few minutes to sit back and relax and enjoy some good conversation in a less formal space. Feel free to bring something for the Picnic Basket - a poem you liked this week, a thought you had or something you experienced, or even something completely unrelated to poetry whatsoever that you just feel like sharing. Just take a moment to say hello, and maybe have a bite to eat; no one is going anywhere fast, and the shade promises some relief from the everyday heat. Let’s get to know each other a bit better, here under the branches of the poet’s tree.

Contemporary Poetry Review: D. H. Tracy and the Role of the Poet-Critic
It still takes me aback a little when I meet a poet in contempt of criticism, or who has received advice from teachers—I have actually heard this—to avoid criticism altogether. When poetry seems determined to mediocritize itself in this way, I suppose I look to poet-critics to save us from being a laughingstock. The best criticism I know combines analysis worthy of philosophy or science, with learning worthy of scholarship, with fineness of feeling worthy of art. Poet-critics, empirically speaking, seem to achieve this suspension comparatively easily.

(I haven't heard from my pinch-hit partner since they became my pinch-hit partner, which worries me, but I would be delighted to cross-post the poem itself to [community profile] poetree! Probably using my [personal profile] alexconall account, lemme just go double-check that that account's a member here...)

Would you have any interest in making a week out of it? i.e. posting poem text, yes, but also posting about what the process was like & the evolution of how it unfolded, and anything else you'd like to bring to bear. We'd be a very appreciative audience, and I think there's a lot to be learned re: what it's like to work with multiple people & to do a project of this size.

Re: pinch-hit partner - eep! Do the [community profile] pod_together admins know? Do you need help finding another pinch-hitter if your assigned one doesn't come through?

I...don't know. (I'm flattered to be asked, though.) Let me think.

It only just occurred to me that it might be a problem. I'll go email my partner right now, and if they don't answer I'll bug the admins.

ETA: It's only been a week and, this being a party favor, they've got a couple weeks left. So I'm not going to be terribly concerned. Yet. On another note, jj, do you have any objection to me sharing bits from our workshop chat? (I suspect the answer's yes but I gotta ask. Also gotta ask kaberett and one other person.) The excited AAAH about exploring my process is overcoming the scared AAAH at doing it in front of people, so I'm probably gonna say yes, I'll do the week of posting process and shit as well as text of poem.

Not at all! I'm flattered that you want to, and very much looking forward to reading your process thoughts in general. Would you have any interest in the week you do being Mon., Sept. 2nd - Sat., Sept. 7th?

Re: not hearing from your pinch-hitter - keep in mind that you want to leave time in case you do need a pinch-hitter for your pinch-hitter; it's one thing if they're reachable-but-not-started, but being incommunicado entirely for a week without prior notice is not a good sign, especially since most people get more busy going into September rather than less.

Sure! Just need kaberett to clear using their comments and we're golden.

I have an email from my partner timestamped twelve minutes after the notif from this comment, actually. Not started recording, but confident of being done and edited by the sixth. So no worries.

I wrote a poem this past week called, Recidivism.

Snip: You looked surprised when I knew the term
"recidivism rate"
like only people with college degrees
know those words - but I lived them.

I posted at my journal three entries about rereading old issues of Poetry. And in this entry, I linked to three recently published poems (one at Escape Into Life and two at Inkscrawl).
