Sunday, every Sunday, let's have a community picnic. It's probably been a long week, and it's lovely to have a few minutes to sit back and relax and enjoy some good conversation in a less formal space. Feel free to bring something for the Picnic Basket - a poem you liked this week, a thought you had or something you experienced, or even something completely unrelated to poetry whatsoever that you just feel like sharing. Just take a moment to say hello, and maybe have a bite to eat; no one is going anywhere fast, and the shade promises some relief from the everyday heat. Let’s get to know each other a bit better, here under the branches of the poet’s tree.

This is a very fun poem. Thank you for sharing. It reminded me strongly of "Sea Fever" by John Masefield, as well as Frost's "Road Not Taken" (which you have a lovely reference to), and Tolkein's "Roads Go Ever On and On." All poems that make my feet itch and my heart soar with the thought of adventure and what might be just around the next corner.

I also loved the reference to the philosophy that you nothing is ever quite the same when you re-visit it (you can never step in the same river twice). Absolutely lovely. Thank you for sharing.

For Harper's Magazine readers: "Poetry Slam" by Mark Edmundson is a long criticism of contemporary poetry. The argument goes that a focus on the detail-oriented styles has led to poets who lack bravery to try and step up and make broad claims (the examples of hyperspecific topics grow increasingly hilarious). The growing class of academic poets, used to putting up with literary theory, are hamstrung by identity politics, and are unable to say much more than ridiculously specific experience. Very interesting stuff, I found myself laughing and tapping at it in agreement from time to time.

I really liked 'Become a slam poet in five steps', by Gayle Danley, from [personal profile] cadenzamuse's intro post this past week. Listening to it now gives me chills down my back.
