Sunday, every Sunday, let's have a community picnic. It's probably been a long week, and it's lovely to have a few minutes to sit back and relax and enjoy some good conversation in a less formal space. Feel free to bring something for the Picnic Basket - a poem you liked this week, a thought you had or something you experienced, or even something completely unrelated to poetry whatsoever that you just feel like sharing. Just take a moment to say hello, and maybe have a bite to eat; no one is going anywhere fast, and the shade promises some relief from the everyday heat. Let’s get to know each other a bit better, here under the branches of the poet’s tree.

I wrote a poem this past week that, among other things, takes a snippet from Longfellow's Paul Revere slant and strange.

I posted another poem on my main blog. For a tiny bit of context (though it might not help), this was written very shortly after the Baseball Hall of Fame announced its voting results (they have elections for new members every year). This year, like in seven or eight previous years (most recently 1996), no recently-retired player was elected. There were many talented players on the ballot, some for the first time, but likely because of concerns about performance-enhancing drug use, none of them got that many votes.

I did my monthly poetry fishbowl this week. A bunch of new poems are up at:
http://ysabetwordsmith.livejournal.com/tag/poem

There are two new series: Tripping into the Future (about time travel as a weapon) and An Army of One: The Autistic Secession in Space (about autistic soldiers founding a society of their own).

There will be a mid-month fishbowl on Tuesday, January 22 and there's a poll to decide which series to feature in that:

I thought I'd share some poetry written for the Idle No More movement, which is a protest campaign against the Canadian government's recent violation of treaties with its First Nation peoples, as well as a general indigenous rights activist movement. In response to the Canadian government's actions and the noble hunger strike of Chief Theresa Spence (it has been a month), several members have written activist poems to spread awareness. Here are a few:

This Is A Terrorist Act by Alex Jacobs

because only as Dead Indians do we have power
the power to get the media government to possibly listen
the power to get lawyers & support groups & interviews & press conferences
& fund raising & headlines & media bytes & celebrities on our side…
In the Americas, Justice stands on the bodies of Indians,
And the hard part is to get Justice to look down…

Giving A Shit by Janet Rogers

Blissful ignorance
Sounds like holiday songs
on a Saturday morning
The same day she enters
Day 12 starving
For her people
Starving for attention

Simple Choice by Buffalohair

The rhythmic beat from drummers hand
Will echo forth throughout the land
The happy songs will fill our heart
We’ll dance for joy with life’s new start.
