For Writers:

Challenge #1: Write a poem of any kind using one of the following opening lines*:
  • They chopped down the lazy tree last Friday
  • He made time from spinning seconds collected from door jambs
  • it was enough to make an alien weep

Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] stillnotbored’s monthly first line contest where people submit first stanzas of poems using that month’s first line.

* There was no one clear winner from the Potential Opening Lines poll; these are the two tied for first and the immediate runner up.

For Readers:

Challenge #2: Comment, if you haven’t already, on at least one post from this week (3/12 - 3/17) or this upcoming week, and add a new comment of length (three or more sentences) on an older post not tagged '!admin' to the community with fewer than three comments as of this post.

Among those eligible are the following:

The winner for each week’s writing challenge will be chosen by a rotating volunteer from the community. (This week’s volunteer judge is [personal profile] bookblather. Thank you, [personal profile] bookblather!) The winner for the reader’s challenge will be chosen randomly among all those who successfully complete the challenge. Winners will be offered the choice of either a personal haiku written for them or 15 Dreamwidth points. While anyone is welcome to accept and complete either or both challenges, the following people are not eligible for winning: this week’s judge (ineligible for winning Challenge #1; eligible for winning Challenge #2); last week’s winners (ineligible for winning whichever challenge they won last week); the winner of Challenge #1 (ineligible for winning Challenge #2); and the POETREE admins, [personal profile] jjhunter & [personal profile] alee_grrl (ineligible for winning either challenge).

Note that you do not have to be a member of POETREE, or even Dreamwidth for that matter, to participate. When you complete one of the challenges, please comment at this post with links to your poem or comments; if you complete both, please comment separately for each challenge.

The deadline for both challenges is Friday, March 23rd, 11:59 PM EST. Winners will be announced that Sunday.
