Sunday Picnic amongst the Fae

Sunday, every Sunday, let's have a community picnic. It's probably been a long week, and it's lovely to have a few minutes to sit back and relax and enjoy some good conversation in a less formal space. Feel free to bring something for the Picnic Basket - a poem you liked this week, a thought you had or something you experienced, or even something completely unrelated to poetry whatsoever that you just feel like sharing. Just take a moment to say hello, and maybe have a bite to eat; no one is going anywhere fast, and the shade promises some relief from the everyday heat. Let’s get to know each other a bit better, here under the branches of the poet’s tree.

I wrote a short poem this week called No Vacancy that uses teeth as a metaphor for vulnerability. You can read it here

I have *two* posts to share this week. *beams*

One is a poem I wrote about autumn light, memories, and trauma (though the trauma bit is there, and could be triggery, I tried to go light on the imagery there and instead focus on the emotions): What is it about autumn light

ETA: And there's a lovely follow-up to my poem in the comments by [personal profile] spiralsheep

The second is a post some about a job working for a poet and some about my favorite poem by him, as he passed away this summer. I've been meaning to post it for awhile, but as his 97? 98? birthday would have been coming up soon, I got nudged to post it. Don't be put off by the title: Like virtue

It's from last week [Halloween], but I have a haiku (senryu) called sleeping with ghosts, about a boy who haunts me.

I wrote a poem I was pleased with this last week: Where Light Gets In
the day is long
the night not long enough
but light gets in despite ourselves

I've posted my first two attempts at poetry in a long time. You can find them here and here. Both are untitled, so far.

I'm back to writing poetry again after a fairly long break (warning, both poems belong to the genre "war poetry". The first has a tacit reference to suicide; the second to casualties):
Not All Remembered & Bones, Sinews, Viscera

(Any suggestions for improvements to technique etc definitely welcome. I'm rusty!)

Fae poems and magic

[personal profile] alee_grrl 2013-11-10 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
This weekend I was fortunate enough to spend a day at FaerieCon 2013. It was very fun, and there was much to draw inspiration from. I pretty much used up all my spoons and then some, so I am planting the inspiration so that I may draw upon it later. But I thought it might be fun to have a thread to share some of our favorite magical poems.

An old favorite of mine is Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market What are some of your favorites?

OOO NEXT TIME I WANT TO GO.

I wonder if that poem is where Seanan McGuire got the inspiration for goblin fruit.

I highly recommend it! It was a lovely mid-size convention, not too crowded and easy to navigate. So many wonderful inspiring things to see. Next year I hope to have enough spoons to go for the whole weekend and attend the masquerade balls.

I would not be surprised it that is where Seanan McGuire got his inspiration for goblin fruit. :)

McGuire's a her.

::facepalm:: I feel like I should have known that. Oh well, thanks for the correction. :)

There are usually three events done by this group: FaerieCon East, which is the one I attended in Maryland, FaerieCon West, which is coming up in February and will be in Seattle, Washington, and FaerieWorlds, which is in July and held in Eugene, Oregon. FaerieCon East 2014 will probably be in November or October, though I don't know where yet. :)

Conventions can be pricey depending on what package you get and where you stay. It is often worth it to stay at the hotel where the con is being held because it makes getting to things and mingling with other con goers so much easier. We did day passes for Saturday and stayed Friday night so that we didn't have to get two twelve year old up, dressed and into a car early Saturday morning. Often times they will have sales and group discounts on passes and hotel rooms. And splitting the cost with others can make it much more affordable. I do budget extra money for spending in the exhibit halls though, because there are guaranteed to be lots of pretty shinies and other fun things to buy.
