I think acknowledging the historical borrowings from Chinese and especially Japanese cultures are important (credit where credit is due) but I also think that translating Japanese poetry into English, OR writing syllabic poetry in English, OR attempting to translate a Japanese poetic form into English, OR creating new English poetic forms using (selected) Japanese rules for content &/or style, are (at least) four differing intentions. Any difficulties in communication seem to arise when one Anglophone group seek to claim exclusive use of a Japanese term for their English poetry, and/or two groups who use borrowed Japanese terms differently talk at cross-purposes because their assumed meanings for those terms differ. I think I'll continue to describe mine as "syllabic" with a count if necessary, heh.
